these projects stand out above the rest for unique.
The Walnut Project:
Project Scope:
Local lumber was harvested and air dried for 1 year prior to our involvement. After picking it up and bringing it back to our shop further moisture removal was than required to bring the lumber down from 15-20% MC to its workable 7-10 %. To bring the lumber to its final moisture content we built a Solar Kiln. This tempering process used the hot California sunshine to bake the lumber indirectly during the days (often hitting over 140 Degrees F). At night vents were closed and the kiln was allowed to cool off retaining the moisture that had brought to the surface. This process created stable, defect free lumber that retained its natural reddish brown color. The lumber was Solar Kiln dried June, July, & August 2016 before it underwent processing over the next several months All of the lumber was then magnetically checked for metal and surfaced on our cnc router. Most of the lumber was too big for our planer (most 24", the 4 big slabs were 48" x 96"). After surfacing to desired thickness (trying to keep the slabs as thick as possible) the lumber was restacked with over 500 lbs weight and clamped to a table as it acclimated for several weeks to air temperatures similar to its climate controlled environment. The lumber was then split between the two requested projects (bar top w/ panels and coffee table. Both pieces carried a refined live edge look throughout The bar top was made from the smaller two of the four slabs One end was fit against the other and was scribed so that the longer board could retain its live edge. Boards were then chosen for the face panels. The lumber that finished at 1-3/4" thick was then ripped and re-planed and book matched to create the stile and rail panel work for the face of the bar. The two largest slabs were used as the top for the coffee table. They were fitted together and spaced to accommodate a river display running through the center. A templet for the glass was then made, water jet cut, and tempered out of perfect low iron glass Once finally fitted, thick boards were than jointed and laminated to create the pedestals and base for the table. Once final fitting had been complete, the project was disassembled and finished with a clear flooring system and rubbed out. Once the finish had been cured and polished, the kiln was then disassembled and used as the crating for the project. It several hundred years to grow the some of the most beautiful walnut we have ever seen, in our 6 month long involvement with the project we were proud of both the challenges and the final outcome. |
